I spent the weekend in Brighton visiting a very good friend and took the opportunity to sample some delicious gluten free vegetarian food. Brighton offers a huge variety of food to cover every dietary requirement and it’s given me lots of ideas for recipes that I want to try!
My favourite food of the weekend was at a restaurant called ‘Food For Friends’ https://www.foodforfriends.com/ which was perfect given I was experiencing it with one of my oldest friends. My friend is also Vegetarian, so we opted to order a couple of dishes to share over three courses.
To start, we ordered Marinated house olives – In garlic, thyme, rosemary, parsley, to go with our choice of Cava Rose. They offer a large range of Wine, Beers, and cocktails, including some alcohol free options.
For our second course, we ordered three ‘Small Plates’ to share:
Small Plates
Mushroom ‘Scallops’ – King oyster mushroom, butternut squash puree, tenderstem broccoli, sage, pickled shijemi mushrooms
Sweet corn ribs – Glazed with kabayaki and served with tamarind bbq, cumin yoghurt
Charred sweetheart cabbage – Served with a choice of melted gorgonzola or homemade cashew cheese [Ve], white grape sauce, caper fritte, fig
Our final choice was a ‘Large Plate’ to share as well. There were many tasty options, but we went for a beetroot themed plate:
Large Plate
Batata Vada – Sri Lankan beet curry, spice infused potato croquette, labneh, sambal,
I can’t wait for some sunny weather to try making the Sweet Corn Ribs. I made a great BBQ glaze in a previous recipe for Cauliflower wings which will go great with these. Now we just need some hot summer weather so I can dust off the BBQ and give these a try!
I’m also growing sweetcorn in my vegetable garden this year, for the first time, so hopefully I will have plenty of crop make these many times over. Watch out for my recipe in a future blog post.
